The third concert features compositions that reflect, or are directly inspired by, tensions and critical events taking place in the world. Even as dark themes pervade the music, we hear there is always hope indicated in the music. The composers we present in this concert demonstrate this dichotomy in their distinct and idiomatic styles. Contemporary composer Peteris Vasks, through the purity of simple melodies, produces a composition of ethereal soundscapes. The recently deceased George Crumb wrote 'Black Angels' in responds to the Vietnam war. Here a classical string quartet also performs with percussion, such as gongs, bowed wine glasses and much more. With this piece the roles and function of the string quartet are pushed to the boundaries of possibilities.
This music also demands dramatic choreography.
